Why has SBCC suspended its offering of Continuing Education Units (CEUs)?

Requirements from State agencies have recently changed for licensed providers of Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for CNA’s, RN/LVN’s and MFT/LCSW’s. We are sorry to announce that SBCC Center for Lifelong Learning is therefore no longer offering CEU’s. Please check online and with other local agencies for offerings elsewhere..

CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANTS (CNA)

What board approves licenses for CEUs for CNA’s?
California Department of Public Health (CDPH)

Why is SBCC suspending its offering of CEUs for CNA’s?
Due to the increased rigor the State has imposed on courses to satisfy CNA CEUs, the Center for Lifelong Learning, whose primary role is to offer personal enrichment courses, is unable to offer such courses.

How can CNAs get their CEUs now?
There are many websites that provide information and coursework for California CNAs.

SBCC does offer a program consisting of two courses through Noncredit Educational Programs: Restorative Nurse Aide Training (Basic and Advanced). These courses do offer CEUs to CNAs and have been approved by the State. The program is intended to be taken as a whole to provide a certificate of completion so CNAs can achieve entry level to the role of Restorative Nurse Aide.

Agencies that employ CNAs typically offer CEU courses for their employed CNAs to meet the renewal requirements. In Santa Barbara, the Alzheimer’s Association also offers a series of courses for CNAs to earn CEUs.

Additionally, CNAs can take advantage of several on-line courses that offer CEUs.
Please check online and with other local agencies for offerings elsewhere.

Is there any chance that people will lose their CEU credits?
SBCC is concerned about this issue, and is working diligently with CDPH to see what can be done.

When will the CDPH be able to confirm that students who have been awarded CEUs will not lose the CEUs awarded?
We are working with CDPH to confirm this and provide more information as soon as possible.

Is there any chance that some CEUs will not be approved or accepted?
Our hope is that this process will have minimal impact on our class participants. We are working with CDPH to inform us as soon as possible.
